What kind of identification can I use?
Acceptable identification must be presented for each signature being notarized.  Satisfactory evidence of identification for the State of California can be one of the following IDs:

  • California driver's license or identification card issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Temporary IDs are not acceptable.

  • U. S. passport issued by the Department of State of the United States.

  • Foreign passport stamped by Homeland Security.

  • Driver's license or identification card issued by any other U. S. state as long as it has a photograph, identifying number, physical description and a signature.

  • Mexican or Canadian driver's license as long as it has a photograph, identifying number, physical description and a signature.

  • Military identification card as long as it has a photograph, identifying number, physical description, and a signature.

  • An inmate identification card issued by the Department of Corrections, if the inmate is in custody.

  • Credible witness or witnesses with satisfactory evidence of identification.

Note: A copy of the signer's identification is sometimes required for certain documents being notarized  - check with the person who prepared your document to find out if a copy of your identification is also required.

Can a notary offer me advice about the content of my document?
In the majority of cases, the answer is no.  Unless a notary is a licensed attorney, a notary is prohibited from performing any duties that may be construed as the unlawful practice of law.   Should you have any questions about the document being notarized, we recommend you contact the originator of the document and seek clarification.

Can a photograph be notarized?
No - a document must contain the following requisites to be notarized:

  • Wording or text committing the signer to the document.

  • Notarial wording (which determines the type of notarization).

  • An original signature of the person appearing before the notary.
